Description:A half-length portrait of a woman in the traditional costume of the Vinschgau/Val Venosta Valley; her hair combed high on her forehead under a black lace bonnet with a white brim, she wears a long, green jacket, open at the front, with brown, white-embroidered cuffs; under that is a red corset with red ribbons over a blue pinafore, a white blouse with a short stand-up collar of lace and with lace cuffs, with a black pile tucked into her bodice; and a voluminous coat with a white and blue patterned half-apron.
In her raised right hand she holds a rose and, in her left, a book.
The background shows a landscape with mountains, with a tree trunk on the right of the picture. Attached to the tree is a dark-framed, dark yellow cartouche with the inscription “Barbara Thomanin” and below it a scroll inscribed: “geborene Alexanderin / Ihres Alters 45, 1766 [née Alexanderin / her age 45, 1766]”.

Hist. crit. notes:The sitter is probably Barbara Thoman, the wife of Jakob Thomann the Elder of the Melanzhof estate, located in Kortsch/Corzes in the district of Schlanders/Silandro, whose portrait is also held in the South Tyrolean Folklore Museum. She was painted at a time when only wealthy farming families could afford such portraits.
