Description:A three-part economy cooking pot, the “SPARKÜCHE KOKI” [KOKI economy cooking pot] was a cylindrical red lacquered casserole with a hinged lid and fastener, with two handles on opposing sides of the upper part. The product name, “SPARKÜCHE KOKI”, appears in white lettering on the front, with the company stamp, “G.B. / N.”, in the form of a black lozenge below. The inside contains a stoneware pot made to fit with an iron handle and a separate lid topped with a knob fitted with an iron ring.
Hist. crit. notes:As the First World War continued, raw materials became ever more scarce and expensive, with war production taking priority. Resourceful entrepreneurs and product developers reacted to this by bringing numerous innovations onto the market.
These included the “Sparküche Koki”, designed for energy-saving home cooking and introduced between 1914 and 1918. The set consists of a metal outer pot with an integrated stoneware pot; it is generally regarded as the first pressure cooker, or at least its predecessor.
The appliance is mentioned in Henriette David’s wartime cookery book “Deutsches Volkskochbuch für teure Zeiten [German popular cookbook for expensive times]”, the tenth edition of which was published by Velhagen & Klasing in Leipzig in 1921 with the “Sparküche Koki” listed in chapter 21 on “aids and substitute utensils for the kitchen and cooking”.
