Title:Winter jacket belonging to Monika Hauser
Object name:jacket
Description:Khaki-green women’s winter jacket of cotton and polyester, size L, with detachable hood and numerous outer pockets with zippers. Four inner pockets of light-blue satin lining material were subsequently sewn in.
Hist. crit. notes:In 1993, shocked by the violence against women in the Bosnian war, gynaecologist Monika Hauser founded an aid centre for traumatised women in the Bosnian city of Zenica. She repeatedly smuggled the necessary money into the war zone in pockets hidden in her jacket. At the time this was the only way to avoid checks and help the severely traumatised women who had been forced to work in brothels. Her aid organisation, medica mondiale, is now also working in Afghanistan as well as in several civil war zones in Africa. Monika Hauser has received numerous prizes for her work, including the 2008 “Alternative Nobel Prize”. This green winter jacket was loaned to the MuseumPasseier by Monika Hauser for the exhibition “Heroes & Us”: it is the only object in the exhibition that presents a modern-day heroine.
