Hist. crit. notes:The artist Leander Schwazer rephrases the words of pop-country singer Johnny Cash as “I Fought Geometry, and Geometry won” to describe his series of zip panel paintings, highlighting the tension between the handling of the tactile but also the stubbornness of the zip fastener and the impossibility of using it to realise exactly geometrical grid constructions. Between these two poles, the artist positions his works precisely where the friction between material and concept is most noticeable. (Sabine Gamper, in “Arbeiten. Leander Schwazer uses commercially available zip fasteners sewn together as pictorial material for a group of works consisting of image objects and installations.
