Hist. crit. notes:Esther Stocker’s paintings, sculptures and spatial interventions are characterised by a visual system of geometrical patterns and signs in black, white and shades of grey. At the same time, subtle disruptions, breaks or gaps undermine the principle of order and visualise supposed unambiguousness as a fleeting phenomenon. The “crumpled sculptures”, made from coated sheets of paper, distort the strict geometry in a similar way to a ball of paper, introducing folds into the system and in turn creating a new order – the order of disorder in an infinitely complex reality. (Marion Piffer Damiani, in “Arbeiten. Lavori in corso II [Works in progress II]”, Bozen 2020, p. 232)
In her most recent works, black squares in grid patterns are transferred in a repetitive form onto the surface of objects that are suspended in space. By folding and creasing the original paintings on paper, she creates "clusters" or reliefs on the wall. The process of creasing the black-and-white grid patterns creates a distored array of variously arranged squares, thus also alluding to instances of Op Art and subsequently transferring them into the three-dimensionality of space.
