Hist. crit. notes:The two photographs form part of the series “Transitando”, a documentary portrait of South Tyrol by Nicolò Degiorgis. An artist, curator and publisher, he seeks out the region’s cultural idiosyncrasies, its contradictions and prejudices as he traces the identity of the people, the peculiarities of the landscape and its cultural appropriations. The images of the forest diptych were taken in Natz/Naz and, as is often the case in his work, show two complementary sides of a landscape: in (sun)light and in shadow. (Günther Oberhollenzer, in “Arbeiten. Lavori in corso II [Works in progress II]”, Bozen 2020, p. 48)
“Transitando” means “transiting”: it is a documentary portrait of the region of South Tyrol with the aim of presenting some of the cultural idiosyncrasies of this part of the world. Nicolò Degiorgis wanders through Italy’s’ northernmost eighty kilometres, searching for weaknesses, encounters and contradictions in this borderland. His aim is to trace the identity of its people and its landscapes. The images seek on the one hand to establish a dialogue between the ideas and prejudices of the viewer and, on the other, with the reality as the photographer has explored it.
