Description:Embroidered work on steel frame dating from 2016 that can be hung freely in a space or on the wall. The textile object can function as a prop, a costume or a wall hanging. It is a unique item that was completed in three months. The work includes a 2018 textile print with three colour photographs on linen that documents the 2016 performance at Goldsmiths’ College in London. Limited edition of ten print runs (+2 AP).
Hist. crit. notes:Barbara Gamper questions traditional ways of assigning the female body by creating handwoven textiles in the form of objects and costumes, then activating them in participatory live performances. Using round, oval and triangular shapes, the artist’s objects refer to archetypes of femininity, drawing on the work of the Lithuanian matriarchal researcher Marija Gimbutas and the historian of science Donna Haraway and her theories of a new relationship between the Earth and its inhabitants.
