Description:C-Print from the Project "TRASITE". Documentation of the Installation with Replicas of the Riace Bronzes (life-size) at the Parc on the Ilm, Weimar. Ed. 5.
Hist. crit. notes:“Trasite“ means “welcome” in Calabrian dialect. It is an expression used also in the little village Riace in the South of Italy. Riace is known for two things: the Riace Bronzes, two Greek statues, which were found in the sea in 1972, and the alternative refugee program Riace, Città Futura, which started in 1998 when a boat of 200 Kurdish refugees anchored on the village’s beach. Dealing with this village on one side and German Classicism, or the concept of translation of Wilhelm von Humboldt on the other – in the context of the current situation of people who are coming to Europe by the Mediterranean Sea – Trasite is referring to the topic of mobility and cultural exchange once upon a time and in present day. Considering the role of Germany as one of the main representatives of the EU and the desired destination of many refugees and putting it next to the idea of cultural import during German Classicism, the question is left open: Who is welcome and who is not? With the installation of two replicas of the Riace Bronzes, a bridge is built between past and present, to challenge the notion of cultural translation, and referring to it as it relates to today’s world, wherein we seem constantly to be moving from one place to another, and where we are forever speaking about the migration society. Putting the sculptures in the context of the current movements in the Mediterranean Sea, one could consider them as a symbol of the migrants. What about these sculptures, washed up on our shores, are they more welcome than any human being? (Maria Walcher, 2014)
