Hist. crit. notes:Kien was the pseudonym chosen by Josef Kienlechner (1903 - 1985). With both parents originating from Bolzano, his father went to Germany to perform at concerts and worked as a singing teacher. While studying art in Berlin in the interwar years, the young Kien was able to absorb the vibrant atmosphere of this cultural metropolis. By the start of the Second World War Il his expressionist style with smooth finishes had evolved, revealing the influence of his mentor, Carl Hofer. Between the end of WWIl and the 1950s, Kien's colour schemes had changed, as he opted for darker outlines and narrow fringes of light.
His painting on display at the Bolzano Provincial Council building dates from this period. Its position on the wall in symbiosis with the artwork on the left, the work portrays a bouquet of tulips, in which one flower droops limply. In the same frame is an image of a blond woman walking a small dog through the forest. As the elegant woman with a hat approaches the vibrant tulips, the surrounding trees appear to sweep upwards. Despite his increasingly abstract work towards the end of the 1950s, Kien continued to paint figuratively. Poet Joseph Zoderer, whom Kien had befriended, wrote about him on numerous occasions. (Markus Neuwirth, Moving between North and South, in: Art in the Provincial Council of South Tyrol, Bolzano/Bozen 2024, pp. 163, 165, 206-207)
