Hist. crit. notes:Max Sparer (1886 - 1968) was from Sella/Söll-Termeno/Tramin. An autodidact, he began working at an early age. Following in the footsteps of Albin Egger-Lienz and Carl Moser, landscapes and animals largely made up the themes of his paintings, etchings and woodcuts. Together with fellow artists Carl Moser and Karl Pferschy, Max Sparer went on to exhibit at the Venice Biennale.
The composition of his 1952 painting at the Bolzano Provincial Council building depicting a train of oxen diagonally bisecting the frame is somewhat unorthodox. It perhaps reflects the influence of Japanese art on Sparer around the turn of 20th century. His contrasts using whites and browns are also telling. (Markus Neuwirth, Moving between North and South, in: Art in the Provincial Council of South Tyrol, Bolzano/Bozen 2024, pp. 175, 177, 224-225)
