Hist. crit. notes:Maurizio Nannucci, who was born in Florence in 1939 and still lives and works there, has since the 1960s dedicated himself to exploring the many relationships between written language and image. He works with photography, videos, artists’ books, but also with acoustic recordings. The examination of colour in all its forms of expression has always played a special role for the artist: this is particularly evident in his neon installations, in which colour, form and the meaning of words come together. In his work Sessanta verdi naturali, Nannucci juxtaposes sixty photographs of various green plants, all of which differ from one another chromatically. The work addresses the interaction between the simple colour designation “green” and its numerous, diverse manifestations in nature. Sessanta verdi naturali was created between July 1973 and October 1974 and is based on research that began in 1970, when Nannucci began to verbally identify industrially produced colours. As he came across certain coincidences in the names, he looked for the original state of colours in nature, which is ultimately the origin and reference point of all colours. This led to Nannucci’s work on the colour green, which depicts 60 plants in their natural size and gives them botanical names as colour designations.
