Hist. crit. notes:"Takes as its starting point two clichés' of Belgian culture, a diagrammatic 1950 building and an artist who became a seminal figure for what is now refered to as 'Institutional critique'. In 1958, belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers worked as a labourer on the Building of the atomium, designed for the 1958 word fair in Brussels. He recorded the fabrication of this pavilion in a series of photographs. Almost 50 years later the atomium has been restored. During the restoration a series of black and white photographs that directly mimic those made by Broodthaers were produced under the instructions of Simon Starling. Collapsing the moment of the original building project onto that of its subsequent restoration, looping back in time, these new images shadow their 1950's precursors frame for frame. In a Berlin Labroatory, a negative from one of the photographs documenting the renovation of the Atomium has been stripped of its gel coatin, uncovering the developed silver particles ."
