Hist. crit. notes:“Jimmie Durham, who is of Cherokee descent, began his artistic activities around 1960 against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. For years he campaigned intensively for the rights of Native Americans: having ceased his political activities, he returned to the plastic arts and writing. Jimmie Durham draws artistically on his own cultural roots, ironically deconstructing the stereotypes found in Western culture. He rejects a stable and precise position, instead advocating for an unbiased openness. His work Une blessure par balles consists of an upright, rough wooden panel on which the artist has labelled two different types of hole in the wood: bullet holes from the Second World War and holes made by insects and worms. Durham here brings out – not without a certain irony – the contrast between natural and violent (human) impacts on nature.”
