Hist. crit. notes:Media artist Benjamin Tomasi’s visualizes a moment of transgression in his light installation *=/- (pronounced ‘star equals slash minus’). The arrangement of light, sound and delicate vibration, as well as its translation into a symbolic code – in its title – only eludes meaning. Tomasi challenges us to complete and sense what we perceive independently. Our task begins in the artwork’s very setting – a pitch-black installation space. We enter the room blinded by the dark and our eyes grasp the installation’s delicate projection on the wall only gradually. As we come closer to the abstract image of a horizon, we notice its blurry contours and apparent delicate vibration. Everything in this context seems to be on the threshold: Our perception, as well as, the fine line depicting our only focal point in that present.
Benjamin Tomasi chooses his material and its form wisely. Continuing a refined artistic method of analysis, he demonstrates uniquely the transformation of primary physical conditions. By this, creating moments of illusory transcendence. What we perceive as vibration is a sound, yet infrasonic. Two resonating mirrors facing each other in minimal distance produce the impression of a horizon when a light beams through this gap. Two loudspeakers resonate the glass and warp the light of image. This is the experimental origin of the “shadow play” on the wall.
Though apparently minimal in its structure, *=/- does not represent a work of formal minimalism, but an elementary one. Emanating from precision, clarity and technical sophistication Benjamin Tomasi often imparts a spiritual momentum to his works. Simultaneously, his construction reminds us of an illusionist’s repertoire were it installed in a mirror cabinet.
This work’s beauty lies less in the artist’s exaltation of spectacle, but in the unveiling of how semblance materializes in art.
