Title:Mappa totius Mundi (original title)
Number of parts:1
Object name:map
Created by:Lotter, Tobias Conrad (Kartograf) (Augsburg, 1717 - Augsburg, 1777-07-14)
Production date:(about) 1760 — 1762
Description:Hand-coloured engraving with the planisphere, a representation of the surface of the Earth in two circular areas, i.e. the western and eastern hemispheres and, in the upper corners of the map, smaller representations of the northern and southern hemispheres. In the middle at the top is an elaborately designed cartouche that frames the title of the map: “MAPPA TOTIUS MUNDI...”. This also gives an allegorical representation of the four continents, with shrubs, trees and a palm tree. In the middle of the map at the bottom is a smaller text cartouche: “Annotatio...”. The various routes taken by explorers and circumnavigators (Magellan, Tasman, Le Maire) are marked with dots on the two hemispheres of the western and eastern hemispheres and highlighted in colour.
Hist. crit. notes:Following the death on 1 March 1757 of Mattäus Seutter, in 1757-58 Tobias Konrad Lotter took over the former’s publishing house in Augsburg. His publishing house, the “Lotter’sche Verlag”, existed from 1758 to 1810: the map was probably printed around 1760-62.
The full text of the title cartouche reads: “MAPPA / TOTIUS MUNDI / Adornata juxta Observationes / Dnn Academiae Regalis Scientiarum / et nonnullorum aliorum, secundum annotationes recentissimas. / Per G. de L’ISLE Geographum Parisiis. / Prostat nunc in Officina. / TOBIAE CONRADI LOTTER / Geogr. et Chalcogr. / AUG. VIND.”; while the text cartouche reads: “ANNOTATIO / Autor reddit ratione / in sua nova Introductione / in Geographiam de mutationib g / quas fecit in hac Mappa, sicut etiam de coeteris, quas in lucem / edidit.”
