Hist. crit. notes:The term geognosy, today synonymous with the term geology, was until the 19th century used to denote the study of the structure and makeup of the Earth’s solid crust. A geological map shows the conditions of an area on the Earth’s surface on the basis of geological mapping, which involves collecting geoscientific data and entering it on an accurate topographical map or base map.
Joseph von Scheda reworked Wilhelm Haidinger’s geognostic map, introducing galvanoplasty at the Military Geographical Institute in Vienna in 1846. This technique was used to create an initial print from newly engraved copper plates, from which multiple printing plates could also be created. This facilitated the production of large print runs of map sheets of consistent quality, even before the introduction of photomechanical gravure printing in 1869 .
The complete title of the map reads: “Geognostische Karte / des OESTERREICHISCHEN KAISERSTAATES / mit einem großen Theil Deutschland's u. Italien. / Hauptsächlich nach Hen Bergrath Haidinger's geognostischer Karte dieses Staates bearbeitet / von / JOSEF SCHEDA / Sections Chef im k.k. militär. geografisch. Institute, / Ritter des kön.
